OUTLAND

OUTLAND is inspired by Homer’s Odyssey and reflects on Odysseus’ refusal to accept Calypso’s offer of immortality and what it means to be human. It is a metaphor for the anxiety brought about by our constant quest to redefine ourselves and our relationships, and our refusal to be confined within a defined comfort zone. The work extracts snippets taken from life focused on willing dislocation at the expense of safer and more peaceful harbours. It ultimately seeks to redefine the notion of home, particularly one lived on a land surrounded by huge expanses of water where – where, according to Gilles Deleuze, “Humans cannot live, nor live in security, unless they assume that the active struggle between earth and water is over, or at least contained.”
